BARRINGTON, IL SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 -- GE Healthcare IT today introduced Centricity® Enterprise Orders and Pharmacy, the latest release of the integrated cross-continuum Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and Pharmacy system. The solution seamlessly integrates CPOE, Pharmacy Verification and Dispensing, and Nursing Documentation in consolidated workflows across areas of care.  The application offers customizable order sets and embedded real-time clinical decision support aimed to reduce preventable medical errors and the turn-around time for medication orders.
 
GE Healthcare partnered with the Mayo Clinic, University of Virginia and University of California San Francisco in the development of Centricity Enterprise Orders and Pharmacy. These organizations consulted on early prototypes that served to improve and refine the functionality of the CPOE and integrated pharmacy solution.  Mayo Clinic Rochester served as the first pilot site to go-live. Today, Mayo Rochester is 100% CPOE for inpatient ordering and is planning on implementing outpatient ordering in the future.  

 “Although CPOE has been available for over 10 years, most systems were not built from the physician’s perspective but rather from that of the nurse, pharmacist or ward clerk. This solution's intuitive approach to CPOE streamlines rather than complicates physician workflow by reducing the time and number of steps and fields needed to generate a computerized order,” said David Mohr, MD, FACP, Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Chair Mayo Clinic Rochester Information Technology Committee. “Our solution has also reduced the time from when a medication order is written to when it is received in pharmacy from 50 minutes to a matter of seconds. At the Mayo Clinic, we process over 25,000 orders daily. Integrated clinical decision support rules are triggered 250, 000 times per day. These rules are mostly transparent to the provider and allow us to follow best practice guidelines and alert the provider of deviations from the best practice.”
 
Seamless integration between CPOE, Pharmacy Verification and Dispensing, and Nurse Charting provides a closed-loop medication management cycle for a fully coordinated and informed care-delivery team.  With Enterprise Orders and Pharmacy, physicians, pharmacists and nurses act as an integrated team in the medication management cycle - monitoring medication treatment and medical outcomes, minimizing adverse events, improving patient safety, and decreasing medication costs.
 
A completely integrated ordering and pharmacy application across inpatient and ambulatory care settings, Enterprise Orders and Pharmacy rests on an integrated database, which provides consistency of workflow and data collection as well as reporting, data trending, and disease profiling for all types of orders. This structure provides for the full continuum of patient care ordering for all types of care settings and care providers, as well as transitions of care.
